Treating Nocturnal Enuresis In Grownups

By Jocelyn Davidson

Lack of urination control during the night in adults is an unsettling phenomenon but has a solution. Unintentional bed wetting cannot be controlled voluntarily at any age. It requires several intervention measures recommended by your primary health care provider. They are simple and do not require a lot of resources. The results are long lasting and will offer the comfort of a normal life.

There are genetic linkages to the disorder, but this does not mean that a solution is inevitable. Behavioral therapy in treatment of nocturnal enuresis requires that the patient monitors his fluid intake during the day. This should be minimized in the late afternoon and evening. The aim is to reduce production of urine in the night.

The reduction in fluid consumption should not be at the expense of your health. This means that you should take the same amount of fluid but several hours before going to bed. Bladder volume training is one mechanism used in treatment without reducing intake of fluids. It works by taking adequate amounts of fluids while avoiding urination. It enables the bladder to increase its volume and enhance control.

Bed wetting alarm system alerts you when you begin voiding. It reacts by vibrating or ringing when the first drop is detected. The device is attached to the underwear or pad in which the victim sleeps. Waking up stops the flow of urine and allows you to complete voiding in the bathroom.

A lot of motivation and commitment is required from patients using the alarm system. It will take a number of days to get used to it. The disadvantage is reduction in bladder volume since it is not be given a chance to hold more. This means that you will wake up more often at night.

Medical options complement behavioral therapy or may be used on their own. One risks becoming dependent on them such that the body can only function when you have taken the drugs. No medication should be taken unless the doctor has advised and prescribed. The prescription is done after considering side effects and the severity of your case. This will determine the dosage.

Surgery should be the last resort after all other attempts have failed. It is preferred that you try the non invasive methods before opting for surgery. The risks of any surgical approach should be discussed before the process begins. Surgical options aim at manipulating the functioning of the bladder.

There are various options for managing bed wetting even as you undergo treatment. There are numerous mattress cover options to make cleaning easier. They range from absorbing mattresses to waterproof and vinyl options. There are sheet protectors that can be used with instructions to ensure comfort during the night and avoid reacting with the skin.

Patients may opt for absorbent briefs which are under wears with special features. The features are professionally designed to prevent leakage. There are disposable and reusable versions of the briefs. A patient with a sensitive or easily irritated skin is advised to use the disposable briefs. The market has provided numerous skin products that protect you from irritation. They come in the form of skin cleaning agents, soaps and lotions.
