Advice On Getting Good Bargains When You Shop Overseas

By Andrew Myers

When you are in a different country, you might want to buy some things that you can take back home with you. This is a good idea if it is hard to find the product you want to buy in your home country. It is also a good idea if the price you are paying for the product is quite reasonable. So as to get the best deals when you shop overseas, here is what you need to know about buying stuff when you are in a foreign country.

Before you start buying things, you better make sure that you are in the right place to buy it. There are some countries that are renowned for selling certain products. You will get a much better deal buying stuff in those countries rather than in other countries. So, do your homework first and find out what the country is well known for and buy those products there.

Know what the currency exchange rates are. This way, you will know how much you are expected to pay for items. Also, it will help if you can carry along a calculator with you, so that you can do your own conversions. Or you can download a currency conversion app on your phone, if you have a Smartphone. If the currency you are using is stronger than the local currency, then you can get good deals.

Do the math and see if it will be cheaper for you to bring in the goods from abroad or whether you are better off buying them in your own home country. Some of the costs that you need to think about is how much it will cost to ship the items and how much you will pay for insurance and for packaging. Also, know if it is okay for you to import the stuff into your home country by checking custom regulations.

You can also take advantage of duty free stores to get what you want. There are no taxes levied on these stores, therefore their products tend to be much cheaper than the prices in other stores. You can find these stores in international airports. You can also find them within certain cities. You just have to know where to look for them.

It is imperative that you know the approximate figure that you are supposed to pay for the product. This will help you know whether you are getting a good deal or whether you are getting ripped off. Also, know about the product that you are going to buy, so that you can tell whether you are getting the right quality and the right size for the price that you are paying.

If you come from a country where haggling is not the norm, you might find it a bit hard to negotiate prices. However, people in most countries haggle before they buy something. Therefore, if you do not haggle, you will end up paying more than you should for a product. So, negotiate and try and get a better price.

Another trick is that you buy things from the same place that locals do. Avoid buying from tourist destinations, as their prices are usually marked up too high. So, ask where the local markets are and go there. See if you can get what you want at a much more reasonable price.
