Coaching is a form of development for an individual which involves advice from another person. Whether an informal relationship in which one has more experience than the other or, professional coaching, the practice differs from mentoring due to the focus on achieving specific goals, objectives and tasks.

The term was first used as Oxford University slang in 1830 referring to a trainer or tutor whom helped a student during an exam. As a result, the term coaching now refers to taking any individual from present experiences to where the individual wants to be in the future. Whereas, coaching related to sports did not come into play until 1861 and is more of an in-the-moment type of activity.

While coaching related to professional and personal goals is somewhat newer than other coaching types, it has gained great popularity over the last few decades. For, while groups such as the human potential movement, laws of attraction, positive thinking, large-group awareness, leadership studies and est still exist, most are expensive and time consuming.

Professional coaching uses different communication skills to help clients shift from one type of listening and thinking to another. In doing so, the individual often learns new and different approaches to achieving goals and fulfilling desires. While most popular in life coaching, these communication skills can actually be useful for coaches in any area of life.

Sometimes referred to as a meta profession, coaching can apply to all areas of life including physical, mental, spiritual and political aspects. In fact, most coaches also attempt to create a balance between body, mind and soul during the coaching process. As such, individuals seeking a coach may want to plan to meet up to determine that the relationship would be a good match.

While ADHD identified individuals need to be under the care of a primary health care provider, there are special coaching methods which can be used with these individuals. Unlike life coaching, ADHD coaching also includes aspects to aid in calming symptoms and controlling actions and reactions associated with the condition. In addition, coaches teach ADHD clients how to better and more effectively handle different tasks by sharing time management and other associated skills.

ADHD coaches do not provide professional counseling, therapy or treatment, merely advice and assistance. For, the focus is on the individual learning how to handle routine chores and calm behavioral issues while setting and achieving goals. While this is the case, if the individual is not under the care of a health care provider and does not respond to coaching, it is important to recommend the individual seek help from a mental or health care professional.

When it comes to being a life coach, some countries require certification or licensing while others do not. In addition, practices and principles can often vary between different coaching organizations. Whereas, while coaches working one-on-one with individuals are often known as life coaches, those working in the corporate sector with different businesses are often referred to as consultants.
