An Illustration Of A Career Anchor

By Robert Johnson

These are a combination of perceived values and attitude towards an occupation. Being aware of these will help you make a well informed and intelligent choice on the occupation to take. Making the right choice prevents you from suffering dissatisfaction and frustrations. Every person has a different work orientation. Therefore, the approach of every individual towards work will be governed by specific values and priorities that are unique. Below is a discussion about a career anchor.

The independent kind. Examples of people who fall into this category include teachers, professors, and many others. Their main aim is to attain high levels of education. When their jobs include fixed working hours and lack of varied activities, they can leave them to start their own. They seek to become self-reliable and as independent from others as possible. They avoid promotions and transfers for the sake of gaining independence.

The technical or functional competence. The jobs they prefer to take include being system analysts and engineering. The people around here are quite knowledgeable. They like being challenged and use their skills to do the work better than others. These people identify themselves with their specialty and hence their ability to succeed and get recognized in their specialty defines their self-concept. The production of useful work and content in their areas of specialization forms their motivation.

The ones that seek, security. People who lie in this category are those who are afraid of working in areas of uncertainty and risks. Their primary determining factor when it comes to their ability to live their life is continuity and stability. Their main preference in a working environment is the provision of stability and security rather than challenges.

The general managerial competence kinds. The people who lie in the group of general managerial competence are those that want to rise and take the leading positions such as becoming managers. Their main areas of skills lie in analytical, emotional and interpersonal competence. These are crucial to help them in these positions. Emotional competence helps them remain calm during emotional times while the analytical skill is critical to problem solving.

The entrepreneurial types. These persons prefer being active in working for themselves. So, they will seldom work for others for an extended period of time. Their main characteristic of success is wealth. Without looking at the technology and the intellectual discipline, the primary aim of the entrepreneurial kinds is to produce services and products that are both marketable and profitable. They are highly creative and like taking up challenging assignments. They have a strong inner urge to open their enterprises.

The lifestyle anchor. They believe that work is not the only component of life. They think that life should be balanced with various interests. Their career life is composed of learning, friends, family, hobbies, leisure and recreational activities.

The kinds that are dedicated to a cause. Money is not one of the motivators for people who lie in this category. They include nurses and others who work in supportive occupations. They dedicate their living to serving others. So, they will prefer to work where other people directly receive their services.
