Chinese astrology has twelve signs of the zodiac. However, this concept must not be confused with western astrology, as the signs are not the same ones. Rather, the signs are denoted by twelve different animals. A person is said to possess the characteristics of the animals whose sign he/she belongs to. Moreover, this system of astrology is not based on the monthly birth date basis. It is related to the whole year. A person born at any time in a certain year is classified into one zodiac sign that is ruling over that year. The animals that represent the zodiac signs in Chinese astrology are:

It tells us that the animals were all fighting about who was going to be in the prime (first) position on the Chinese calendar. The gods devised a test in which the animals would compete for their position by swimming across a river. Another version says that the Buddha requested visits by the animals before he left earth. He named the moon cycles after the animals in order of appearance. So, the Chinese zodiac symbol is a circle divided into twelve equal sections; think of it as if you were marking off slices of a pie. There is a picture of the animal representing that Chinese zodiac sign in each section. The calendar's use dates clear back to 2600 BC.

The animals used in Chinese astrology are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (goat), monkey, rooster, dog, and boar (pig). Persons born during their cycle are said to take on their animal traits: Rat- stickler, charming, aggressive, secretive, party-loving, quick-witted, stubborn, good at politics and business, can be mean Ox- Quiet, rapid to anger, excellent memories, hard-working, family loyalty, creative, skillful hands, responsible, self-confident.

The mouse, the dragon and the monkey are said to belong to one group. This is because these three are animals that believe in doing rather than speaking. They are very optimistic in their approach towards life. They are extremely honest and offer good competition to each other, which helps each one excels and work to the best of his abilities. The mouse has streaks of cowardice; the Dragon has streaks of velour. The Monkey may be mischievous. The character traits all relate to acts.
