When To Know When Selecting Shaft Seals

By Gwen Lowe

The decision to choose a shaft seal for specific application can be encircled by doubts and dissatisfaction. Considering that a person has to choose from the various shaft seals available that have different specifications, making an informed decision on which to choose can be a great challenge. However, there are various factors, which people should consider to make their selection simpler.

Among the primary things to know is whether the shaft and the seal has the same temperature range. It is advisable you choose a seal whose temperature does not vary greatly with the operating temperature of the shafts. This is to avoid cases in which the seal would wear out after a short time due to being exposed to more temperatures than it can withstand.

Normally, seals are not created with the ability to endure the impacts of pressure. Therefore, exposing them to high pressure can reduce their lifespan and performance. With the improved technology, nowadays some designers are creating custom-made sealing materials to meet certain specifications. Before choosing, it is important to determine if the seal you choose can meet the operating specifications of your shafts.

You also need to know the kind of finishing in the shafts. Mostly, if you seal badly polished shafts, they will tend to wear out quickly to cause leakages. The shafts would also develop some malfunctioning issues after a short time of operation, if the polish marks and the fluid do not move towards the same direction when the shafts are rotating. It is for this reason that people should make sure the surface of the shafts is maintained well.

You should also decide on which seal type to select. You need to make your choice between synthetic and leather sealing. Rubber sealing materials are known to have better resisting capabilities to finishes as compared to the synthetic materials. Since leather is absorbent, it also produces a self-lubricated seal, which means it can still work when in little lubrication or no lubrication.

In order to select the most appropriate coat for your special application, it is also important to know whether it can meet the operating specifications of such shafts. In most cases, designers create certain coats depending on the conditions of the environments on which they would be used. It is important to know whether the potential application is corrosive or not as the coats made for use in corrosive conditions would have better resistance than the ones that are not.

Different shafts move at different speeds. When choosing shafts, you should determine their eccentricity, run-out and the finish. You should also know the kind and the amount of lubrication such shafts are designed to use as this would determine the speed at which such shafts can move to help you choose the best seal.

When shopping for any type of product, you should know various things. Some of these are the performance, the quality and design of such products. As you choose a seal for your shafts, you should also consider these factors before making your decision on which to choose. This is because not all shafts or coats are the same.
